It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp; -Arthur Ashe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, November 11, 2019, is Veterans Day, a legal U.S. holiday that honors men and women who have served in the military. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, in commemoration of the World War I armistice between Germany, America and America\u2019s allies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An armistice is an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop&nbsp;fighting for a specific period of time.&nbsp;World War I, which began July 28, 1914, ended on November 11, 1918 when the armistice was signed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"World War 1\" class=\"wp-image-883 lazyload\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1-620x413.jpg 620w, https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/world-war-1-lrg-1.jpg 1600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/683;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year later, on November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson expressed his thoughts about Armistice Day in a special message to the American people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c\u2026To us in America the reflections of\nArmistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died\nin the country&#8217;s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of\nthe thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has\ngiven America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of\nnations\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1926, the U.S. Congress passed legislation calling for the\nobservance of Armistice Day with appropriate ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November 11<sup>th<\/sup> became a legal holiday in 1938. The day was \u201cdedicated to the cause of\nworld peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as &#8216;Armistice Day&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day by President Dwight\nEisenhower in 1954 to acknowledge living and deceased veterans from all wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Day celebrations around the country include parades, film festivals and special events. A Veterans Day national ceremony is held at the Arlington National Cemetery.
