{"id":274,"date":"2016-10-04T18:14:43","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T18:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.americanveteransaid.com\/?p=274"},"modified":"2016-10-04T18:14:43","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T18:14:43","slug":"veterans-day-parade-first-responders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanveteransaid.com\/newblog\/veterans-day-parade-first-responders\/","title":{"rendered":"Veterans Day Parade Grand Marshals pay tribute to 9\/11 First Responders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York City\u2019s Veterans Day Parade will take a slightly different approach this year \u2014 for the first time, three Grand Marshals will lead the 30-block parade up Fifth Avenue, each of them both a 9\/11 first responder and a veteran of the nation\u2019s post-9\/11 wars.<\/p>\n<p>The three are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Port Authority Acting COO <strong>Stephanie Dawson<\/strong>, an Army National Guard colonel who commanded troops at Ground Zero and served in Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and later in Iraq.<\/li>\n<li>\u200aNYPD Det. <strong>Nelson Vergara<\/strong>, who worked for months at Ground Zero and served with the Marine Corps in Iraq.<\/li>\n<li>\u200aFDNY Battalion Chief <strong>Joseph Duggan<\/strong>, who responded to 9\/11 and served with the Army Reserve in Iraq.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOur three grand marshals represent the centuries-old tradition of our veterans who continue to serve their community after their service to our nation is concluded,\u201d said\u00a0Doug McGowan, a Marine vet and\u00a0the chair of United War Veterans Council, the nonprofit that runs what\u2019s officially known as America\u2019s Parade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur first responders and our veterans remind us that 9\/11 was at once our darkest moment and our finest hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nov. 11 march will commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9\/11 while honoring first responders as well as the men and women who\u2019ve served the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately\u00a040,000 veterans, active-duty personnel and their supporters from 30 states will begin\u00a0the march with a memorial ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument on Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street.<\/p>\n<p>That monument is dedicated to those who served in the First World War, whose conclusion made Nov. 11 first Armistice Day, and now Veterans Day.<\/p>\n<p>The parade is always an inspiration; and this year especially,\u00a0there&#8217;s even more reason to attend and show support and give our thanks to\u00a0American veterans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City\u2019s Veterans Day Parade will take a slightly different approach this year \u2014 for the first time, three Grand Marshals will lead the 30-block parade up Fifth Avenue, each of them both a 9\/11 first responder and a veteran of the nation\u2019s post-9\/11 wars.
